What is watt [Watt]?
The amount of electricity/energy consumed by light is measured in watts or watts, which indicates the energy per watt. unit of time.
For example, a 50W light bulb uses energy equivalent to 50 watt hours (Wh) or 180 kJ in one hour. A 100-watt lightbulb would use the same amount of energy in half an hour, and a 10-watt lightbulb in five hours.
Brightness is measured in LUMEN. The higher lumens mean stronger light. Understanding lumens is the most important step in understanding the amount of light that energy efficient CFL and LED lights will deliver as market demand for them grows. The FTC 2012 regulation requires lightbulb labels to show lumens instead of watts as a measure of lightbulb brightness. Different models of grow lights with the same wattage will emit different lumens of light. In this guide, you will find it easier to compare them by lumens.
How many watts per square meter for lighting?
It is important to understand that the number ofactual wattsyou need for your growth depends on the following factors:
- Plant type (strong or low light)
- Plants like peppers, tomatoes, etc. need more light
- Low-light plants include leafy greens, herbs, and basil salad
- growth phase
- Plants require different amounts of light at different stages, including the seedling, vegetative and flowering stages.
- The size of your canopy [The area you need to cover for plants]
- A larger grow area requires more wattage lights.
Coverage area in watts
First, let's look at the footprint. Although many manufacturers list "core coverage" on their websites/manuals, these figures should be taken with a pinch of salt. Here are some recommendations:
Here is an overview of the light size and footprint
- 2′ x 2', a single 150-250 watt device should be fine for this room
- For 2′ x 3′ footprint, a single 300-400 watt device
- 2′ x 4′, two 150-250 watt devices
- 4′ x 4′, four 150-250 watt units, a pair of 300-400 watt units, or a single 600+ unit. Read about it in detailLED grow light for 4x4 grow tent
- 4′ x 6′,a pair of 600+ units or three 300-400 watt units
Actually watts
First, you need to understand that not all watts are created equal (in fact, a watt is a watt). The wattage information does not match the information provided by the manufacturer on the lighting units. You should be checking the wattage that a lamp is actually drawing and not the "wattage on the board".
Let's take as an example a light unit that has 300 x 3W LED chips on the board, 300 x 3 = 900, so I have a 900 watt LED light, right? none! At full capacity, the light has a maximum output of 900 watts.
Operating a lamp to its maximum generates a lot of heat and significantly shortens lamp life. To balance the fine line between reliability and performance, manufacturers design their light units to operate at only a fraction of full capacity.
So the same device with the 900 watt LED board can have an “actual wattage” label ranging from 380 to 800 watts. The key is to check the actual power consumption of the light fixture and not trust the name.

growing tips
LED grow lights are powerful and can bring great benefits when used correctly.
The recommended height of LED grow lights from the top of plants varies significantly from model to model and brand to brand. The optimal distance to plants is affected by many factors, including the way the lenses reflect the light onto your plants (angle) and the individual size of each LED bulb!
In general, you should place LEDs at least 18 inches above the top of the plant. Finally, it is best to contact the manufacturer and ask them for a recommendation on the distance between LED grow lights and the top of the plants.
lighting time:
Vegetative-Stadium:12-14-Timer
Blütephase:9-12-Timer
fruit phase:7-8 hours a day
Height above plants:
Plants require different amounts of light at different stages of their life cycle. You can control the intensity by changing the height of the LEDs above the plants.
Sowing:24 inches
Germination:24 to 30 inches
Vegetative-Stadium:18 to 24 inches
Blossom:12 to 18 inches
Although LEDs run cool, some LED pet lights give off an intense amount of light that is beneficial to yields, but can burn plants if held too close.
Precautions, tips and recommendations for growing
- Most grow lights are for indoor use only and are not waterproof. Avoid placing the candles in dripping water or other places where there is a risk of getting them wet.
- Turn off the power when there is lightning or thunder to protect the light.
- LEDs are very intense and can cause color distortion, "spotting" or temporary blindness. Carrysunglasseswhen the light is on.
- When the fan stops spinning, turn off the light.
- The working environment for most grow lights is -20~40℃, 45~90% RH.
- Ensure a constant voltage to avoid damage to the lamp.
- Do not touch or move when the light is on.
- Placing the LEDs too close together can cause your plants to "sunburn" what looks like a nutrient deficiency!
